Experience the thrill, drama, and romance of some of opera’s most beloved and immersive stories, performed by acclaimed live orchestra, London Concertante, and some of the UK’s greatest opera singers – all presented by spectacular candlelight as part of their sell-out Candlelight Concerts series

Feel the intensity of Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma” from the epic opera Turandot, as its powerful notes sweep over you. Delight in the delicate harmonies of Delibes’ “Flower Duet” from Lakme, a floral celebration of soprano voices. Meanwhile Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro Overture” sets the tone for comedic intrigue, leading seamlessly to the emotional depth of Puccini’s “O Mio Babbino Caro” from Gianni Schicchi.

The evening continues with the lively overture from Rossini’s Barber of Seville, followed by Verdi’s spirited “La donna e mobile” from Rigoletto. Experience the seductive allure of Bizet’s Habanera from Carmen before being serenaded by Puccini’s heartrending arias, “Un Bel Di Vedremo” from Madame Butterfly and “E Lucevan le Stelle” from Tosca.

If you don’t consider yourself ‘in the know’ about Rossini, Verdi, or Puccini, fear not, this is the orchestra for you. London Concertante boasts an impressive record in which half of all spectators are first time classical concert goers.

The highly acclaimed orchestra has its audience laughing at jokes, gasping at virtuosity, moved by gorgeous string playing, and leaving with a smile on their faces.

When: May 30, 2026, 1:00 pm

Venue: Bath Abbey

Lunchtime Recital – Chipperfield Choral Society

Chipperfield Choral Society is a mixed voice choir based in Chipperfield, Hertfordshire.  We give a carol concert in December in the local Chipperfield Church, a Spring Concert in another local larger church on a sacred theme, where we have recently given an acclaimed performance of Mozart’s Requiem and Haydn’s Maria Theresa Mass, followed by a mixed programme of music for our Summer Concert in June.  Singing songs on the theme of ‘Look at the World’, choir members are delighted to be performing at Bath Abbey as part of the lunchtime recital series.

There are no auditions for the choir as we believe that anyone with a love of music and singing is welcome to join our weekly rehearsals in the local Village Hall. We aim to achieve a high standard of singing in a fun and friendly atmosphere, under the direction of our MD Sheila Cornall.  We also encourage young talent through an Award Scheme funded by a legacy from a former choir member who enjoyed singing with us so much that she wanted to give something back to the community.

Hertfordshire Chorus at Bath Abbey

Hertfordshire Chorus at Bath Abbey

When: June 13, 2026, 7:30 pm

Venue: Bath Abbey

Hertfordshire Chorus at Bath Abbey

Hertfordshire Chorus makes its long-awaited debut in the beautiful city of Bath with a compelling programme of twentieth century choral music.

Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms provides an electrifying mix of Broadway energy and traditional sacred music. Commissioned for Chichester Cathedral in 1965, Bernstein’s setting of Hebrew psalms pulses with the same rhythmic vitality that made West Side Story a global phenomenon.

Prepare to be swept away by the triumphant radiance of John Rutter’s well-loved Gloria (1974) offering three movements of unabashed joy. From its blazing brass fanfares to its tender central ‘Domine Deus’, this is Rutter at his most melodic and exuberant.

Judge Smith’s Requiem Mass is an utterly distinctive work that fuses progressive rock with symphonic choral music. It was given its first concert performance last year in London by Hertfordshire Chorus to rave reviews, over 50 years after its composition. Originally conceived in 1973 by legendary progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator’s co-founder, this 30- minute work features solo vocalist, full choir, eight-piece brass section, percussion, and rock band, to create a soaring, moving, and thrilling experience.

Programme
Judge Smith – Requiem Mass
Bernstein – Chichester Psalms
John Rutter – Gloria

Performers
Alastair Brookshaw tenor
Maurice Marten treble
Rufus Frowde organ
Matt Turner percussion

Haydn Youth String Orchestra

Founded in 1989, the Haydn Youth String Orchestra (HYSO) is one of the leading youth string orchestras in the Netherlands. Based in the north of the Netherlands, the ensemble brings together talented string players aged 12 to 19 and is dedicated to supporting the artistic and musical development of young musicians within the European string-playing tradition.

Many members continue their studies at conservatories, including the Young Talent Class and pre-college programme of the Prins Claus Conservatoire. Conductor Jan-Ype Nota is also affiliated with the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and teaches at the Prins Claus Conservatoire in Groningen and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

The HYSO performs at a high artistic level and combines strong technical standards with ambition and commitment. Through weekly rehearsals, study weekends, chamber music coaching, and regular concerts, members gain extensive ensemble experience and opportunities to appear as soloists. Each season, a soloist from within the orchestra is featured.

The orchestra presents approximately twenty concerts each season in the Netherlands and abroad. Its annual international tour is a highlight of the year. Over the past decades, the HYSO has toured widely throughout Europe, as well as in the United States, the Caribbean, and Suriname, earning international recognition and winning several competitions.

For more than 36 years, HYSO has remained a vibrant platform for young musical excellence.
