Jane Austen, Music and the Great Outdoors

By placing her writing desk by the window, Jane Austen positioned herself at the border between two worlds: Indoors and Out…

Jonathan Delbridge and Penelope Appleyard take audiences on a musical jaunt on the wild side to explore Jane Austen’s love of music and the outdoors and her use of these in her novels. Listeners will embark on a road trip from Jane’s own garden, past Pemberley and all the way up to Scotland, taking in a spot of Regency landscape design!

Performed in period clothes and with an authentic square piano from 1814, The Little Song Party blends scholarship with entertainment in their distinctive, witty style, celebrating all the fun and creativity of domestic music-making.

A scripted mix of music and speech, the playlist for the journey includes Voi Che Sapete by Mozart, Silent Worship by Handel, The Yellow Hair’d Laddie, and Auld Lang Syne, as well as poetry and much more.

West-Country based voice and historic piano partnership The Little Song Party perform creative and entertaining recital programmes on historical themes. They are currently focusing on domestic music of the Regency era. Frequently to be found in period costume, chauffeuring a 209-year-old Broadwood square piano, ‘Lady Catherine’, around the UK in a Skoda estate, Penelope and Jonathan travel around performing their unique semi-theatrical programmes.

Experience breathtaking music by some of classical music’s greatest composers, performed by some of the country’s finest classical musicians, all presented in stunning candlelight.

At the heart of the concert is Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, the most recorded work in classical music and a defining showpiece for solo violin. Each concerto depicts a different season, shaped by accompanying poems – possibly written by Vivaldi himself. Across the four concertos, Vivaldi transforms the natural world into vivid musical scenes, evoking birdsong and buzzing flies, harvest celebrations, drunken revellers, barking dogs, summer storms and winter ice.

Alongside this, Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, composed on the eve of the First World War, offers a more reflective perspective. Inspired by George Meredith’s poem, it captures a pastoral world on the brink of change, its soaring violin line suggesting a lark gliding high above the mechanised world below, “lost on his aerial rings / In light, and then the fancy sings.”

Opening the programme we have Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, an opera drawn from Beaumarchais’ recently banned comedy, in which a philandering count attempts to seduce his servant’s fiancée, only to be outmanoeuvred by the servants and his own long-suffering wife.

Whether you’re already in the know or completely new to classical music, this is a programme to be enjoyed by all.

After three years of sell out productions, including An Evening of Radiohead and An Evening of Pink Floyd, Let Me In Presents are proud to announce a brand new show, featuring a 10 piece band, accompanied by the ever-present Mike Nowland String Quartet.

The show will move through Kate Bush’s music chronologically, starting with the groundbreaking debut album – The Kick Inside – and delving deep into classics such as Hounds of Love and Never For Ever, until we reach the maternal warmth of 2005’s multi-award winning comeback record – Aerial, touching on everything in between.

Expect the classics – Running Up That Hill (recently featured in Netflix’s Stranger Things), Cloudbusting, Wuthering Heights, but also some rarities and hidden gems, including The Ninth Wive suite, from Hounds of Love,in it’s entirety.
This is a deep exploration of Kate’s music, curated by avid fans of her music for avid fans of her music.

A Night at the Opera is one of London Concertante’s most popular shows.

Featuring four soloists, each singing solo arias as well as duets, trios and quartets, accompanied by a live orchestra, this programme takes you on a journey through some of opera’s greatest showstoppers. The music includes works by Mozart, Puccini, Verdi and Rossini, from operas including The Magic Flute, La traviata, Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot and many more.

An uplifting evening of J S Bach resounding exuberantly through every corner of Bath Abbey

Mass in F major BWV 233

Brandenburg Concerto No 1 BWV 1046

Bath Bach Choir comes home to present an evening devoted to the master, pairing his intimate Mass in F and substantial Cantata BWV 21 with the familiar strains of the first ‘Brandenburg’ Concerto.

Composed around 1719-20, Bach’s four-movement Brandenburg Concerto No 1 opens the programme, creating a sense of occasion with its rhythmic energy, colourful orchestration and lively interplay between strings, wind and horns. The opening movement has a wonderfully festive character, with the horns providing hunting-like brilliance. In contrast, the second movement is quiet and lyrical, with the oboes and strings creating a more reflective atmosphere. The third movement returns to lively Baroque energy, while the finale is a polonaise – a Polish-style dance – followed by a fast minuet and trio, giving the concerto an unusually varied sequence of dances and moods.

Bach’s Mass in F major brings warmth and expressive depth, a compact and richly varied example of his sacred choral writing. Much smaller in scale than his monumental Mass in B minor, it belongs to a group of four so-called Lutheran Masses that Bach assembled around the 1730s, probably drawing on music he had written earlier. The Mass sets the first two sections of the traditional Latin Mass: Kyrie (asking for mercy) and Gloria (a joyful proclamation of praise), using a four-part choir with soloists, strings, wind and continuo.

Cantata BWV 21, Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis (‘I had much affliction in my heart’) is one of Bach’s most emotionally powerful cantatas, less of a Baroque religious work than an exploration of the human experience of suffering, hope and ultimately joy. Scored for four vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra, it takes the listener on a remarkable musical journey, from a dark and restless opening chorus to an uplifting final movement, where the darkness has been transformed into radiant confidence and joy. Bath probably composed it in 1713 during his time in Weimar, revising it several times afterwards. It was performed in Leipzig on the third Sunday after Trinity in 1723.

As it approaches its 80th anniversary, Bath Bach Choir is delighted to give a warm welcome to instrumentalists from Bristol Ensemble Baroque, and singers from Oxford Bach Soloists, to complete the line-up for what will be a heartwarming evening of musical brilliance in Bath Abbey.

Ibstock Place School Choir brings together some of the school’s most experienced singers, drawn principally from Schola Cantorum and Ibstock Choristers. Based at Ibstock Place School in south-west London, the choir is at the heart of a thriving Music Department and a strong tradition of choral singing within the school.

The singers perform regularly in concerts and services both at school and further afield, with recent and forthcoming engagements including performances at Sinfonia Smith Square, St Paul’s Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral and Guildford Cathedral. Cathedral singing forms an important part of the choir’s musical life, giving pupils the opportunity to engage with the rich repertoire and traditions of English choral music in the buildings for which much of it was written.

The choir’s repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing Renaissance polyphony, music from the Anglican choral tradition and works by contemporary composers, alongside larger-scale concert repertoire. Through regular rehearsals, services, concerts and tours, pupils develop not only as individual musicians but as members of a committed and ambitious ensemble.

The choir is directed by Harry Castle, Director of Music at Ibstock Place School. Its 2026 tour to Bath and Wells continues the school’s commitment to providing young singers with memorable musical experiences beyond the classroom, including the opportunity to sing in two of England’s finest buildings, Bath Abbey and Wells Cathedral.

London Concertante celebrate Christmas through the elegance and brilliance of the Baroque era, with a selection of beautifully crafted festive masterpieces.

Opening the programme is the overture from Handel’s Messiah, whose opening section centres on the prophecy and birth of Christ, making it one of the defining sounds of the Christmas repertoire. Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, written “for the night of Christmas”, and Torelli’s Christmas Concerto both capture the spirit of Christmas night, with music that suggests the shepherds of the Nativity and the stillness of the scene.

Completing the programme is Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, a dazzling set of concertos that remains one of the most famous and vivid works in all classical music. Each concerto paints a different season in sound, drawing on accompanying poems — possibly written by Vivaldi himself — to bring the natural world vividly to life. Like the baby in the manger, it encompasses “all heaven and earth in little frame.” From the lilting ‘Pastoral Symphony’ as the shepherds watch their flocks to the effervescent ‘For Unto Us a Child is Born’ and triumphant ‘The Trumpet Shall Sound,’ the work takes us on a profound musical and spiritual journey.

100 strong Bath Choral Society is the city’s longest standing auditioned amateur choir, dating back to 1887, and its tradition of performing this enormously popular work runs back to its very origins. Under the talented direction of Katrine Reimers, accompanied by top-level local orchestra The Bristol Ensemble and featuring outstanding international soloists Olivia Boen, Claudia Huckle, Eamonn Mulhall and Alex Ashworth these will be outstanding performances.

This programme celebrates the elegance, charm and sheer joy of the Viennese tradition with a dazzling selection of orchestral and vocal favourites.

At its heart is the music of Johann Strauss II, the “Waltz King”, whose works capture the wit, sparkle and irresistible energy of 19th-century Vienna. From the effervescent Die Fledermaus Overture to the playful Tritsch-Tratsch Polka, literally “chit-chat” or “gossip”, culminating in The Blue Danube, one of the most famous waltzes ever written: an unofficial anthem of Vienna and a piece that has enchanted audiences for generations, from grand ballrooms to the silver screen in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Alongside Strauss, the programme explores the many moods of the waltz, from Shostakovich’s jazz-infused Waltz No. 2 to the haunting beauty of Sibelius’s Valse triste. Tchaikovsky brings a touch of magic with the graceful Waltz from The Sleeping Beauty and the much-loved Nutcracker Suite, with some of the most recognisable music ever written — from the delicate sparkle of the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” to the sweeping beauty of the “Waltz of the Flowers”.
